Bald Eagles Need Trees Along Streams

Not many people can contain their excitement when they spot a majestic bald eagle soaring overhead. As our national emblem since 1782, the bald eagle represents freedom, longevity, and strength—a true symbol of the American spirit.

A Comeback Story Worth Celebrating

Standing up to 3 feet tall, weighing as much as 14 pounds, and boasting a wingspan of 6 to 8 feet, an adult bald eagle is an awe-inspiring sight. These incredible birds were once on the brink of extinction in the mid-1960s, primarily due to pesticide use—particularly DDT.

But today, bald eagles are no longer a rare sight in the Houston region. Thanks to conservation efforts and the banning of harmful chemicals, the bald eagle has made a remarkable recovery. This conservation success story led to the species being removed from the endangered species list and thriving once again across the U.S., including right here in southeast Texas.

Why Land Conservation Matters

According to Texas Parks & Wildlife biologist Kelly Norrid, preserving land along streams is critical for the survival of bald eagles. These areas don’t just help the eagles—they benefit us too, providing natural flood protection and clean water for our communities.

Bald eagles rely on large stands of trees near bodies of water for nesting, shelter, and access to food sources such as fish, waterfowl, and small mammals. Without these habitats, their survival would be at risk.
